There’s a lot to admire about Switzerland. From world-class Alpine tourism to quaint villages, the country is a dream for winter sports enthusiasts and travelers alike. Skiing, snowboarding, and sledding down snowy slopes are central to Swiss life, and visitors can indulge in high-quality cuisine, including decadent Swiss chocolate and hearty regional dishes.

However, not everyone wants to—or can— take a long, expensive transatlantic flight. Luckily, you don’t have to leave the United States to experience Swiss-like scenery and winter fun.

There is no shortage of U.S. towns that radiate the similar beauty of the European Alps, from Midway, Utah’s Little Switzerland, with its Swiss-style chalets and underrated ski resort, to Vermont’s Quechee Village, set against Swiss-like scenery. Yet few places in the U.S. replicate Swiss beauty whilst combining it with the unique landscape of the American Southwest quite like Greer, Arizona.

Nestled in the White Mountains, 8,000 feet above sea level, this small town has earned its nickname, the “Switzerland” of Arizona, thanks to its pine-covered slopes and quaint village atmosphere. Like Switzerland, Greer offers a year-round mountain retreat, with cozy riverfront cabins and scenic trails. However, like its European counterpart, Greer really comes alive in winter, offering epic skiing and other winter sports opportunities.

Many brilliant and well-known ski resorts in Switzerland draw thousands of winter sports enthusiasts to their slopes. Zermatt, which sits at the foot of the famous Matterhorn Peak, Verbier 4Vallées, the largest ski area located entirely in Switzerland, are just two of the resorts that welcome visitors year after year. However, the reputation of these resorts means they are not cheap, and once you factor in the cost of a flight and accommodation into the mix, you are looking at one expensive vacation!

Luckily, Greer, Arizona, is home to a stunning alternative, offering fantastic skiing without spending your hard-earned dollars on an international flight. While often underrated and overshadowed by some of the more well-known ski resorts in the U.S., such as Park City, Utah, and Aspen, Colorado, Sunrise Park Resort boasts the most ski runs and acreage in the state of Arizona.

Sunset Park Resort sits 9,200 feet above sea level, and is so divine because there are three staggering mountains next to each other: Sunrise Peak at 10,700 feet, Cyclone Circle at 10,700 feet, and Apache Peak at 11,100 feet. The resort offers 67 skiing trails over these 3 mountains, including 2 exclusive beginner sections with small slopes, as well as steeper, more technical runs for advanced skiers.

As well as skiing, Sunset Park Resort offers snowboarding and snowbiking opportunities in the winter, and zip-lining, hiking, and mountain biking in the summer.

Daily lift passes at Sunset Park Resort are a fraction of the price that you might expect to pay at a popular Swiss ski resort. However, ticket prices do go up if you want to ski Thursday–Sunday, if there is high demand, and if you don’t book far enough in advance.

The passes at Sunset Park resort are also Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) cards, and, if kept in your pocket, will automatically scan when you walk through the gates, which means you won’t have to wait in line for scanners at lifts. These cards can also be topped up, rather than buying a new card every day.

Lessons are also available for those who are beginners or want to improve; however, the price of these depends on age and what type of lessons you want, so the price will be quoted upon consultation.

While Sunset Park Resort may not give its visitors the exact experience of skiing in Switzerland, the resort does boast year-round recreation, amazing skiing for all abilities, and a quieter, more tranquil experience, perfect for any traveler seeking snowy scenery and Alpine-like charm without crowds.
