You know, before they’re forced to cut it apart to relocate it! (Link if you haven’t heard- https://www.space.com/space-exploration/the-smithsonian-might-have-to-cut-space-shuttle-discovery-into-pieces-to-get-it-to-texas)
I’ve been to this museum a few times over the years, and it’s always a pleasure. For the record it’s a bit out from the Mall, by Dulles airport, but truly is worth the effort to get out there!

Am I the only peron that dislikes the shuttle? Such a badly executed bad idea, a waist of lives and resources.
Love that museum, the sr-71 is equally as cool
I thought they were going to move the one at Kennedy?
No pictures do it justice. Looks like a big plane. In person, it’s ginormous.
I grew up nearby in the early 2000s when it opened, they had halloween nights for kids and an ATC tower you could go up inside. I think I took seeing the shuttle up close for granted until recently🥺
I have been told as you walk around the shuttle you can smell space?
And by the way, the Discovery should stay right where it is…….
The idea of allowing them to chop it up to feed an ego is disgusting.
The shuttle belongs there. All of america pooled its resources together to design, build, and put her into space. It’s a national treasure and belongs to every American. The Smithsonian is the right place to display her.
Great pic, but you don’t get a sense for how massive it is until you are standing there and gawking at its immense size. Pretty astounding piece of technology for something that started being developed in the late 1960s.
