A serious road accident with fatal consequences and elements of a criminal offense shocked Switzerland this weekend. In the incident that occurred in Schlieren, canton of Zurich, a 39-year-old man from North Macedonia tragically lost his life. According to media reports in Switzerland, The driver, also 39 years old from North Macedonia, initially left the scene after the collision, then turned himself in.
The 500 horsepower car was “flying” in the 30 km/h zone
According to the official report of the Zurich Cantonal Police, the accident occurred on Saturday at around 23:30 p.m. The vehicle, a powerful BMW SUV with over 500 horsepower, was traveling from Engstringerstrasse towards Grabenstrasse.
Police experts, based on the tracks at the scene, concluded that the car was moving at a speed much higher than the permitted speed, in an area where the limit is strictly 30 km/h.
After making a right turn, the driver lost control of the powerful vehicle. The vehicle left the road on the right side, causing a series of collisions. First, it knocked down a street light, then hit a tree next to the road, and finally, it crashed into the front of a residential building.
According to reports, after the accident, the passenger – a 39-year-old man from North Macedonia – suffered serious injuries. Instead of seeking immediate help, the driver and a woman, still unidentified, who was in the vehicle, fled the scene, leaving the victim without help. Emergency services quickly arrived and transported the injured man to hospital, where he died on Sunday afternoon.
Driver surrenders, passenger sought
The Zurich-Sihl police and public prosecutor’s office immediately launched an extensive investigation. Forced by circumstances, the driver reported to the police station on Sunday, shortly before 12:00, and handed himself over to the authorities.
The investigation continues without interruption, as police are still searching for the woman who was in the vehicle to discover her role and identity.
