Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has announced the country’s 2050 nuclear target of twelve large reactors and five thousand megawatts of small modular reactors to deliver 10-15 percent of the country’s electricity from nuclear power.

According to the government’s website, Alparslan Bayraktar explained Türkiye’s nuclear energy goals at the meeting of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) Assembly. The Minister’s plan featured twelve large conventional reactors, including four at Akkuyu, additional plants in Sinop and in Thrace region, plus five thousand megawatts of small modular reactors. He emphasised that this expansion will enable Türkiye to fully utilise nuclear power. He also noted the ongoing efforts to increase local manufacturing of nuclear equipment, and that increasing indigenisation is a priority of the government.

“There is a great opportunity in small modular reactors,” said Minister Bayraktar. “This is one of the most important elements of the new nuclear era. I believe that the strength and dynamism of our industrialists in Türkiye can make Türkiye one of the countries that develops and produces this technology in small modular reactors. We also believe that there are different opportunities in this field.”

Turkish nuclear energy company TÜNAŞ and South Korean power utility KEPCO have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on nuclear energy cooperation. The agreement aims to facilitate the mutual sharing of technical data, information, experience and know-how between Türkiye and South Korea, as well as joint projects.
