With the capacity to scan hundreds of postal items per minute using artificial intelligence, a scanner installed at the North Macedonian Post Customs Office will help detect firearms, drugs and explosives.
The postal scanner, which was presented today at an official event, is a donation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, as part of the Hermes 2 project, which aims to prevent the illicit trafficking of firearms and explosives through postal items in the Western Balkans.
“The postal scanner is of great importance in the joint fight against terrorism, preventing the spread of small arms and light weapons and illegal drug trafficking. This year, over 100 thousand shipments passed through the Post Office customs office, where the scanner is installed, which speaks of the importance that this equipment will have in the control of postal shipments. In this way, the services will be directed to carry out timely and accurate checks of suspicious shipments,” said the Director of Customs, Boban Nikolovski.
Kiro Cvetkov from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Director of the Post Office of North Macedonia, Orhan Kurtishi, also spoke at this event.
Kurtishi expressed special gratitude for the training received by the services that will work on the scanner, emphasizing the importance of the scanner in the timely detection of shipments with prohibited substances.
