Ohio senator introduces measure to eliminate dual citizenship
Given that i am pretty much excluded from the Swiss financial system, my first reaction was, „to good to be true!“
What do you think? What impact would it have on you?
American dual nationals in Switzerland, what will this mean for you?

It won’t materialize, not even worth entertaining
Fuck.
I hope this will effect enough rich people that it doesn’t pass.
> to [sic] to be true!
You know you can rescind your American citizenship, right?
Swiss RePeoplican Party salivating in 3, 2, 1 ….
OP, how would this be “too good to be true”? If you currently reside in Switzerland due to a dual citizenship, you would lose it.
But agree with the other poster, this is a preposterous bill, designed to pander to the senator’s base with no chance of going anywhere. 3% of the US are dual citizens.
Honestly. As an American immigrant that is subjected to the shit IRS requirements of being a foreign resident, I would welcome this with open arms if it meant I didn’t have to give up a ridiculous amount of retirement savings to drop this shitty blue book. I am trying as hard as I can to integrate into swiss culture, but as I am an older American with significant savings that currently would be tragically penalized for denouncing, I am currently stuck with the American passport once I hopefully am accepted as a swiss citizen. Got a few more years to go before I am eligible to apply, so I can only dream the US WANTS to let me go without penalties.
I liked the idea of my kid having the option down the road to study or work in the US easily if they wanted to but I can’t imagine living in the US anymore. Overall it’s a shame to lose the option of the extra passport but a big win on tax reporting and access to Swiss banks though, as you pointed out.
I remember that both the Republicans and the Democrats were making noises last year about abolishing the whole global taxation thing, since it costs a lot and brings in nearly no revenue, but it’s gone pretty quiet on the topic. Any developments?
It won’t pass, but they can have my passport back. Fuck what’s happened to my country.
As a dual national on the other side of the equation I would refuse to relinquish either until forced under extreme penalty.
I don’t think it will pass and they can’t just gut the Constitution but if it gains any kind of traction it can create confusion the same way children born on us soil of immigrants have had to jump through more hoops for passports despite the fourteenth amendment being a thing, the way some gender marker changes have gone through and some haven’t- there will always be rich or lucky people and some others will be less lucky. The confusion and cruelty is the goal, not actual legislative change because these types don’t care about the rule of law.
Again, assuming any kind of traction, my guess is it would hurt people in America with less powerful second passports and dual citizens whose retirement income is US based more than it will affect Americans abroad with other pensions.
Stunt politics.
give up american citizenship. I knew many americans that due to FACTA and all the US bureaucracy tax bullshit simply gave up.Â
That bill is going nowhere and that congressman is a nobody. The end
I have three passports, it was to my understanding before that dual citizenship was already illegal, just not enforced.
Personally I don’t plan to renounce my US citizenship at the moment (am “undercover” as far as banking goes, and you never know what the future brings) but in the unlikely case this measure passes, I won’t be overly upset about it.
but assume that means you won’t have to pay US tax anymore! Ain’t gonna happen.
