I can’t read anything other than the names of the oceans. Surely there’s a better copy. Also, do fill us in on the 1866 annexation act please.

  2. If it had passed…*and* the U.K. and British Canada agreed to just give the U.S. a bunch of new territory.

Imagine if the USA had to deal with us French speakers 😂😂😂

Now just waiting for the Quebec basher comments

  4. I’d be all for the dakotas and Wyoming to collectively only have two senators instead of six.

Thinking of east and west Canada being spoken like North and South Dakota makes my skin crawl.

    Thank god this didn’t happen

Given how much the territories got carved up, i bet Canada would be another 20 states or so

  7. I would imagine the British and British-Canadians would have something to say about this.

Not only is Britain at the absolute height of its power in the mid 19th century, the US is not doing so financially hot at the end of the civil war. Certainly not well enough to turn around and fight the global hegemon

Edit: before people come and say “you’re underestimating the USN”, Americas total naval tonnage circa 1866 is roughly 75,000 tonneau, the Royal Navy, in comparison, is sitting at a coool 550,000 tonnes. Yes the USN is large and perhaps even one of the top dogs of the time, but the Royal Navy in its hay day is another beast entirely.

  8. It’s hilarious to assume they could just annex the area because they passed a bill. They had tried to invade several times before and failed each time. Also half of that wasn’t even British North America in 1866.

Imagine how angry those poor northern states would be. They could never win a Stanley Cup!

  10. Yeah that’s also assuming Canada would just give up their territory. The last time… well look up why the white house is called the white house.

  11. “West Canada” being in the east is giving real “Northwest Territories being neither the northernmost or westernmost territory” energy.

Glad it never passed, though it would be interesting what sort of butterfly effect it’s passing would have caused.

So the post is missing key context. All the bill would have done is authorize the president to offer to purchase Canada from the British.

  14. That Western Canada looks like a malnourished Ontario and the Eastern Canada territory is just the ultimate fantasy of some Quebec nationalists. Map was definitely drawn by a French Canadian immigrant

Looks like.Saskatchewan conquered the Territories and Alberta, we should conquer the Dakotas next and replace the presidents on Mount Rushmore with Dave Ridgway, Darian Durant, Glenn Hall, Wendel Clark and a can of Pilsner.

  16. Nevada should be a state on this map. Unless the annexation bill revoked its statehood. I don’t know, I haven’t read the bill.
