The blockade is part of several similar protests across Greece.

Farmers in northern Greece blocked access to and from the Evzoni border crossing with North Macedonia today, protesting against a number of issues, including high production costs.

The protesters, who arrived from the municipality of Pionia and surrounding areas, set up a blockade at noon, parking their tractors along the main road leading to the border crossing, ERT reported.

The blockade is part of several similar protests across Greece. Farmers point to serious delays in the payment of subsidies by the agricultural agency OPEKEPE — a problem caused by an investigation into a scandal involving false declarations of land and livestock used to obtain European agricultural subsidies. Among their other demands are a resolution to the crisis of rising production costs and persistently low market prices.

This is the second time farmers have blocked traffic at the Evzoni border crossing. On Monday evening, they blocked access for trucks from 6 p.m. and then moved on to a complete blockade, which they lifted at midnight. The farmers vowed to maintain the blockades until the government offers concrete solutions. | BGNES
