BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — In its most recent respiratory surveillance report, the New York State Department of Health reported that influenza hospitalizations are up 99% and cases are up 117%.
That’s just one reason why New York State local health departments are encouraging residents to stay up to date on their vaccines during National Influenza Vaccination Week.
“This is really where we’re trying to push out and encourage all people who are eligible to get that vaccine to receive it,” said Connor Lawless, the Health Program Director for Immunization Action Plan for the Broome County Health Department. “To protect themselves, but also to protect their community. We’re trying to build up that community shield.”
This time of year can cause an unnecessary strain on the medical field, and officials say the best way to prevent that is by getting vaccinated for the flu.
“More of a strain on our medical system. More people, we’re going to see hospitalizations going up from the flu,” said Kylie Holochak, the Public Health Coordinator for Tioga County Public Health. “So really taking that time to protect yourself and your family is so important right now.”
While vaccination is not a 100% guarantee against getting sick, officials said it can decrease the likelihood of serious harm.
“Typically, it’s going to be a milder infection, so you won’t be as severely sick,” said Holochak. “The hope is even if you do get sick, it will help to prevent people from hospitalizations, ICU admissions, things of that nature.”
The season sees an increase in all respiratory illnesses, and officials shared some tips to keep up your overall health.
“So washing your hands, using hand sanitizer,” Holochak told 12 News. “If you typically have hand sanitizer in your vehicle or in your purse and you’ve run out, you know stocking up on things like that.”
For any questions you may have, they said to check with your provider.
“The number one recommendation that we at the county have is to talk to your provider,” said Lawless. “They know you the best, they know your health the best, and they’ll give you the best plan.”
