With a renewed sense of hope in Israel following the recent ceasefire and the return of the hostages, The Shul of Bellaire is once again assembling a local delegation for the Land & Spirit Israel Experience, March 9-15. The weeklong mission brings together hundreds of participants from across the United States for what many describe as a transformative, once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Rabbi Yossi and Esty Zaklikofsky will lead the Houston group, as they have on several previous occasions.

“For nearly two years, our hearts were with our brothers and sisters held hostage,” Rabbi Zaklikofsky said. “We prayed, we cried, and we hoped. Now, with the hostages home and a ceasefire in place, Israel is breathing again. There is a new spirit in the air – strength, unity, resilience. This year’s trip gives us the opportunity to experience that energy firsthand.”

The itinerary blends spirituality, history and modern-day encounters. Participants will meet soldiers, survivors and community leaders; visit the Nova music festival site where Israelis were massacred on Oct. 7, 2023; and explore ancient and contemporary Israel with expert educators and guides.

“A trip like this changes you,” said Amy Gold, who joined the most recent delegation. “Seeing both the heartbreak and the incredible resilience of Israelis firsthand was something no headline can convey. After being there, the reality of Oct. 7 becomes personal, and so does the strength and courage of the Jewish people.”

Larry Friedman described his past experience as “the most meaningful and eye-opening trip I’ve ever taken.” He added, “I discovered more about Israel on this program than on any of my previous visits with major organizations. JLI [Jewish Learning Institute] reveals the full depth of the Israel story – the history, the people, the soul. Every visit strengthens my Judaism and makes me feel like I’ve come home. I’m already counting down to March.”

Local organizers say the momentum is building. “We already have a wonderful group registered, representing a cross section of our community,” said Esty Zaklikofsky. “It’s more than a trip. It’s about standing with Israel at a pivotal moment and bringing that inspiration back home to strengthen Jewish life in Bellaire.”

Rabbi Zaklikofsky emphasized that the timing is significant: “If anyone has ever considered going, but hesitated because of the war, now is the moment to lean in. Israel is alive with renewed hope and Jewish pride. There is no substitute for experiencing this historic chapter in person.”

Registration for the 2026 program is available at landandspirit.org. Area participants are asked to use the community code JewishBellaire26.
