Switzerland Implements Updated EU Visa Suspension Mechanism for Third-Country Nationals

Changes and Effective Date

On December 5, 2025, the Swiss Federal Council approved the implementation of European legislation requiring amendments to the Regulation on Entry and Visa Issuance. The amendment will take effect on December 17, 2025.

The amendment, previously approved by EU member states, adjusts the activation thresholds of the mechanism and introduces new grounds for the reinstatement of visa requirements at the Schengen area’s external borders.

The EU informed Switzerland of the approval of this amendment as a further development of Schengen legislation.

It is also reported that the EU Council on Monday, November 17, ultimately approved the updated EU mechanism for suspending the visa-free regime for third-country nationals who do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area.
