Whatever it takes to get Elon to a trillionaire I guess.

Speculation by Elon probably.

How is SpaceX able to generate so much value but NASA was always viewed as a financial sink?

Well, the Tesla racket is probably about to pop. So they’re gonna have to find another insanely inflated vehicle to bilk the rubes with.

This valuation, like everything else associated with Elon, is hogwash.
Let’s say that this valuation is based on Starlink and the telecom potential (despite Starlink being more expensive for both the provider and the consumer)… $800billion is nearly 4x the market cap of China China, T-Mobile or AT&T. So SpaceX could be the most valuable telecom on the planet and still need to justify another $600billion in valuation.
Let’s say that SpaceX is valued based on defense contracts and other government contracts. You could add Lockheed ($104 billion market cap) and Boeing together ($154 billion), and still be left trying to justify another $350 billion or so in valuation.
So SpaceX could be the largest telecom provider (it’s not) and the two largest defense contractors combined (it’s not), and yet it would still not be worth anywhere close to $800billion.

The question is, how valuable is their position in the space economy. No one compares, not even close. Being #1 in a critical sector has its value in itself.
How much is that worth? Who knows. But I can tell you it is quite valuable to have the “keys” to space while not many others do.
Side note: RocketLab will own these keys and have a bustling vertically integrated space systems business to go with it. Valued at $26B. There’s a large valuation gap here that investors can take advantage of. How much? I don’t know. Once Neutron is flying (and landing), I guarantee that gap will tighten significantly. Food for thought if you’d like to take on some investment risk. Best

Man, if we aren’t heading for an almighty stock market crash I don’t know what.

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I’ve seen in this thread:
This is a very poor indication of what SpaceX’s value would be if it were a public company. They are only allowing a small portion of shares to be sold so naturally it’s expensive.
