Weather in Cyprus will remain rainy until Thursday, as the storm “Byron” is approaching the western areas of the island, but the Meteorology Department is not expecting extreme phenomena, like the ones that battered Greece the previous days, Officer of the Department of Meteorology Panagiotis Georgiou told CNA on Sunday.

Georgiou noted that the storm’s eye is located west of the coastline of Cyprus and is slowly moving east, producing rainfall until Thursday. The rainy weather is expected to recede on Friday.

Isolated thunderstorms and rain are expected until then and the Meteorology Department will probably issue weather warnings tomorrow, Georgiou said. He explained that rain and thunderstorms initially occur at the coastal areas and then move to the inland and the mountainous areas.

On Sunday, rainy weather will continue until late in the afternoon and, after a pause in the evening, it will resume on Monday morning. Asked whether the forecast shows strong winds, Georgiou said that the strongest are expected to be at 5-6 degrees on the Beaufort scale in coastal areas, around 4-5 in the inland and the mountains. Extreme winds of 7-8 degrees are not forecasted, he said, but explained that during a thunderstorm winds will be stronger and alternating.
