On December 8th, Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) said that a couple of weeks ago – on 24th November – it had asked the Prosecution Office to initiate criminal prosecution against a Latvian citizen “for prohibited work on behalf of companies in Russia, violating sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU).”
VDD initiated the criminal case against the unnamed person on 8th August 2025 pursuant to Section 84 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, namely, for the violation of the EU sanctions.
“During the investigation, VDD found that the Latvian citizen had entered into employment contracts with multiple companies registered in Russia, where the person held the positions of general director and director and directly gave prohibited consultations on economic activities, management and taxation,” said a VDD statement.
“VDD draws attention to the fact that, in reaction to Russia’s war in Ukraine, citizens of the member states of the EU are prohibited from providing consultancy to companies registered in Russia in the fields of economic activities and governance, as well as taxation,” it added, without giving any further details of the case or the companies for which the services were allegedly rendered.
The State Security Service (VDD) is one of the three Latvian Security and Intelligence Services, the others being the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB) and the Defence Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD).
