Former Kosovo Assembly member and activist for the rights of Albanians in the United States, Faton Bislimi, has announced that the United States’ positions towards Kosovo and the Western Balkans have been codified in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2026.
Bislimi underlined that the National Defense Authorization Act, which is considered one of the most important American laws, has already received Senate approval and is in the final stages for approval in Congress.
After approval by the House of Representatives, the law is expected to be sent to the US president for enactment.
The text of the draft law, which runs to 3 pages and has already been published, includes provisions related to the national security of the United States, from military equipment and its procurement, to soldiers’ salaries, to defense strategies and the defense budget, including a section that codifies American policy towards the Western Balkans and Kosovo in law.
The National Defense Authorization Law includes support for Kosovo and the countries of the region on the path towards integration into NATO and the EU. The United States will support the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, based on mutual recognition, and will oppose any idea of division or exchange of territories on ethnic grounds. According to the document, the United States of America will promote progress in the implementation of the agreement and is ready to launch strategic dialogue and economic initiatives in the region.
