Many counties are like 10,000 to 100,000 more in population than the 2020 numbers on this map show when the 2021 and 2022 censuses were done.

Still a lower population in Ireland today than pre famine though

  2. 1841 population: ~8.2 million (still the historical high water mark for population)

    2025 population: ~~5.4 million~~ ~7.2 million

Edit: 5.4 million did not include Northern Ireland

  3. Ireland is the only country in the world that experiences population cycle for the second time

Thank you UK for your complete mismanagement of Ireland /s.

Without your incompetence we may never have strived for independence.

The famine, emigration, and concentration in the capital + relocation of Protestants to the North really did a number on the interior and west coast.

  6. The east coast is propping up the country’s population. Pretty eye opening to see most of the west is still at half the population to 1841

  7. To step aside from the obvious “muh ireland population 1840vstoday”, i find this data extremely interesting, such as tyrone having a larger population than derry, or cork being twice as populous as dublin

It is wild seeing how empty the west became after the famine. Maps like this hit harder than any history class because you can literally see where entire communities disappeared. Ireland’s population story is basically a timeline of tragedy, migration, and slow recovery

  9. The main consequence of the famine for the long term demographic was culturally entrenching migration. When america is right there,as well as Australia being low population density, many times more people left ireland even up to today than died during the famine
