Lithuania’s government has declared a state of emergency in response to disruptive smuggler balloons originating from Belarus, which have repeatedly closed Vilnius airport. The balloons, allegedly used to transport cigarettes, are seen as a ‘hybrid attack’ by Belarus, according to Lithuania’s authorities, in a move impacting aviation and national security.
Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic announced the emergency status to protect both civil aviation and national interests. While Belarus denies responsibility, accusing Lithuania of provocations, the Lithuanian government seeks parliamentary approval to expand military powers for collaboration with police and security forces.
The proposed military powers would enable the army to control territories, inspect vehicles and individuals, and exercise force if necessary. The measure, supported by Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas, accompanies calls from European leaders to address Belarus’ actions. Such steps follow similar emergency declarations in past conflicts related to Belarus and Russia.
