A spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup is on the line on the final day of UEFA qualification, as Austria gets set to host Bosnia and Herzegovina in a potentially winner-take-all clash on Tuesday.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the biggest in the event’s history, with more countries competing for ultimate glory than ever before. That means qualifying is more important than ever before. While the powerhouse nations are always favorites to move on to the World Cup, there is always the chance for the smaller nations to pull off a stunner.
In next year’s World Cup, 16 countries under the UEFA banner will be eligible to compete in the tournament.
It has been a long time since Austria played in the World Cup. The nation’s last trip to the big event came all the way back in 1998. They have been the most consistent team in Group H so far, and just need one more good result on Tuesday to advance.
Since the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina has only made it to the World Cup once, which came in 2010. Thanks to a win over Romania last Saturday and points in back-to-back matches.
Austria is two points ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina heading into the final matchday. A win or draw for the Austrians means they move on, with Bosnia and Herzegovina needing a win to nap first place.
Austria beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first meeting qualification last month, 2-1.
