At the Ukrainian–Romanian border, a new digital system for biometric data control, EES (Entry/Exit System), has been introduced. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine confirmed the deployment of this technology. From December 10, full entry and exit control regime has been launched.
Launch points and the pace of implementation
Pilot locations – border crossings «Dyakivtsi – Rakovets», «Krasnoilsk – Vikovu de Sus» and «Dyakove – Halmeu» – began recording national data and visitors’ biometric details.
The Porubne – Siret border crossing will begin operating under this system from January 9, 2026.
Earlier, the EES system went live at the border crossing «Solotvyno – Sighetu Marmației», where implementation started on October 12.
From March 10, 2026, all other border crossings on the Romania border are planned to be connected to the EES system.
The procedure involves scanning passports, taking photographs, and collecting fingerprints from third-country nationals, including Ukrainian citizens.
The first entry or exit through the border creates a digital record for each traveler; during subsequent crossings, biometric data will be matched against this record.
Fingerprints will not be taken from children under 12.
The goal of the EES system is to speed up border control, enhance security, ensure accurate tracking of foreigners’ length of stay in the EU, and combat illegal migration. The State Border Guard Service emphasizes that the introduction of EES does not change the overall border-crossing procedure; citizens are asked to take these changes into account when planning trips.
The changes in the system are aimed at faster and more reliable border control at the Romanian border and more precise monitoring of foreigners’ stay in the EU. Full integration of all border crossings is expected by March 10, 2026.
