On Thursday, 11 December, Linards Kumskis (Latvian Farmers’ Union/Latvian Green Party), the incumbent deputy mayor, was elected as the chairman of the Sigulda Municipal Council, LSM.lv reports.

Kumskis led the council in the previous term as well, after Līga Sausiņa (NA/LRA/Vidzeme Party/New Conservative Party) was removed from office with his support. Kumskis was also among the deputies who ousted Jānis Vimba (Sigulda District Party) from the office of mayor on November 13th this year.

The incumbent deputy mayor Kumskis was the only candidate for the position of council chairman. Ten deputies voted for him, while eight voted against.

The new chairman of the council named several priorities. First, existing municipal initiatives and institutions must be maintained and developed, with particular attention paid to civil protection. Second, municipal infrastructure facilities must be developed, including the reconstruction of Sigulda Secondary School and the stadium. The third priority is the value of the municipality’s employees, so it is necessary to invest in their growth and training. Administrative processes must also be simplified and digitised as much as possible.
