Is it true?

  1. Probably?

Like a lot of the IT firms are in dodgy sectors like FX, gambling, mobile “gaming” (basically more gambling) and other unsavory areas that generally are associated with high pressure sales, high stress etc. and are probably being run by people who aren’t particularly ethical or give a shit about others.

There’s legit ones, but also there’s shitloads of smaller shitty ones.

  2. >In a completely unrelated note, if we Cypriots hate the Russians and the Israelis that doesn’t bode well for a solution. Nothing to see here, let’s move on 🇹🇷🔥

This post is in memory of /u/-4E-, banned for exposing Turkish propaganda.

If it’s about people working hard and expecting it from others I wonder how will same Cypriots describe American work culture

  4. They call those firms “galleys” – bottom of the barrel pay, intense monitoring, intense pressure, otright illegal clauses in the contracts like fines, withholding pay and liability. The list is simply huge. And there are tons of them – opening and closing depending on how much heat they attract.

  5. Some Russian dev in these companies work around 70h a week. You go there early in the morning, they are there, you come at 10pm to grab something you forgot, they’ll still be there. But they are extremely well paid (six figures a year is a real thing for them). Only devs though, other services in these companies (marketing, research, sales, etc.) usually work like in Europe (with like 30-45h a week), it’s even chill for some.

Must depend on companies though, but I know people in 3 major ones in Limassol (my ex worked in one of these companies and I could come and go and see people too), apart from the enormous workload, it’s apparently not that unpleasant to work there.

  6. Gambling industry is huge here in Cyprus. Literal tons of work every day. Forget you have free time or weekends. You live to work not work to live. But the salary is good. You just dont have time to spend it.

When you say “Σιγά Σιγά” but boss says “No”.

Seriously there are some hard working culture firms but most are not and those who are, aren’t nearly as hard as farming for example.

There are something like 40-50,000 Russian settlers in the occupied area, plus about the same number in the south. Their presence in Cyprus is a cultural genocide to our island.

But then they whine “Ohh you should be happy we are here. We are bringing money”. No fucking thanks. The fact they think they can “buy” Cyprus tells me everything.

  9. I think they are translating the word αυτοκτονία/Genocide (incorrectly that is) cause Russian work culture is VERY different to Cypriot work culture

  10. When a Cypriot discovers that people from other countries actually *work* and expect others to *work* – world turns upside down

Comparing the 10% of eradicated Somalis, the Armenian and Jewish holocausts, and the 1,200 massacred Israelis on October 7th (actual genocides) to a toxic work environment is delusional and dangerous.

  12. Makes sense. Working hard is like comitting genocide against the usual Cypriot laid back “work ethic”

  13. It may be dependent on ‘forex’ or not. I heard, some Forex companies has very toxic environment, and while paying a lot of money, they don’t care about long-term well-being of people (burnout, disparaging, guild culture, etc). I don’t think it’s ‘Russian’ related, because at least one such company I know about belongs to Cypriot (not just Cyprus passport, true GC by blood).

  14. Genocide is a poor word choice.

The work culture is like very intensive, lots of work, lots of hours, working overtime. Basically, a high pressure, high yield environment. You get paid really well but you gotta perform even better.

That’s something very different from Cyprus work culture.

Huh lol no. most Cypriots prefer working for foreign companies with the exception of Deloitte and Cooper’s. Hell every one I know that passed from those left to join either a russian company or to start their own. They won’t go to a Cypriot company unless en tou papa ή tou thiou

  16. On the other hand, I’ve met Cypriots who specifically choose to work in Russian-rooted IT companies because of the culture and the paycheck. And I also know people who prefer using Russian-owned services because they are — in their words, not my opinion — more efficient, cheaper, and faster.

    So is that “genocide” too?

  17. Geneva convention violation would probably be a better term with same intention. Although idk, my company is chill, only some questionable demands to wear pants/jeans when it’s +35 outside and full time office mode.

  18. Jokes aside, the topic starter was probably referring to the “unlimited” work hours common in companies with Russian founders. It’s partly cultural (yes, many of us take our jobs very seriously), but it’s also because many developers here are immigrants, and the workplace becomes the main space for socialization. That’s why we spend so much time there and invest so much dedication into our careers. We understand that we can’t count on support from family or the government, so we rely on ourselves and our jobs — and that’s why we work so hard and so much. And for Cypriots it might be really difficult to keep up with the pace.
