BudapestcTypeface:> Two people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized on the Sava river bordering Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, Croatian media reported on Thursday, citing local authorities.

One of the victims died at the scene and the second in a Croatian hospital. Croatian firefighters managed to rescue 11 other people at the site of the accident, near the town of Slavonski Brod. Those being treated in hospital include a citizen of Bosnia-Herzegovina whom police suspect of having acted as a smuggler, media reported.

There was initially no official information about the migrants’ origins. Bosnia-Herzegovina, a non-EU member, and Croatia, which is part of the European Union, lie along the so-called Balkan route used by refugees and other migrants to reach western Europe. (DPA)
