Hello, ๐Ÿ‘‹ Iโ€™m sure there are many expats and locals here, I just wanted to bring this to yall attention maybe my feed is off somehow, past several months Iโ€™m getting bombarded with Russian adds, I try not to interact but to report.

Doesnโ€™t matter the country, itโ€™s basic respect not to advertise in language that is not the official language of the country as you would have done elsewhere, considering the Geo – Rus history, current developments this becomes even more sensitive and I find our outmost disrespectful and distasteful and entitled to advertise in Russian language, often such business try to clap back like btw weโ€™re not Russia weโ€™re from Ukraine, ironic I must say. Anyways to put all aside whatโ€™s your stance on it?

TBH would be amazing for meta to take them down but it doesnโ€™t go against meta community guidelines.

  1. Arent you also posting in a language here that is not the official language?

Or is there maybe a slight racism that drives your opinion of this adds, because of the situation between Russia and Ukrain?I am not judging you by any means, just asking questions.

  2. Are you okay with Russian products in the supermarkets, but this bothers you? It’s very likely because of your phone.

  3. There’s no such thing as basic respect in advertising. Advertising is done to drive customers and thus it’s done in the language they speak. Meta ads work not just based on location but the user’s preferred language. If you’re getting those ads, either their targeting sucks or you consume content in Russian. Hope that helps.

Georgian physical and digital world is infested with russians and their products.

Nothing unusual, just the next step in the hybrid war against Georgia.

Instagram targeting lets you tweak parameters like age, gender, hobbies, behavior, and more, but Iโ€™m not entirely sure about the language settings there. Facebook definitely has language targeting, so you can run ads in a specific language within a specific geoโ€”like Serbian in Brazil or whatever fits your target audience.

Most likely, these ads are showing up either because Instagram lacks those specific settings or because a lousy media buyer forgot to enable language targeting. On the other hand, many georgians understand russian and use expat services anyway. Honestly, it just looks like a baseless complaint to me.

Bullshit. How else would you advertise to foreigners?

businesses want clients, that is what advertisements is for. anything that is grabbing customer’s attention goes. anything that is legal that is. there would be for example a lot of sex in adds if not for regulations. using any language is legal. this particular add is catered for the tourists and expats (who may not be all from russia, but other former ussr countries where they also have a lot of russian speakers) – the masterclass probably would be held in russian – so the add is in russian. and it could be a totally georgian business which is advertising in russian. like menus in restaurants are provided in different languages and there is nothing disrespectful about that.

  8. Well, your feed if off definitely. You mention that you report the ads, but that makes no sense, these ads are legal and not violating platform rules. You better select “Not interested” in the ads option. My Instagram ads feed is mostly English or Georgian, and only about 10% are solely Russian. Also, from your post it’s not clear if you understand Russian or not. If you do, Instagram definetely knows it and pushes you with ads in a language you understand, and it kinda makes sense. If you don’t like it, let the algorithms know by clicking “Not interested” and sooner or later you’ll be good. Peace be upon you.

I mean, Russian is at least widely known by Georgian people (post Soviet country after all) so it’s just not surprising

  10. Oh, don’t get me started with social media articles about Geo in ruSSian language… Force as soft as it gets!

And us… we are happy to encourage clapping and thumbs upping! What a morons we are huh! God, what have we come to… total degradation.

  11. Maybe, just maybe, before teaching someone else “respect”, first we should figure out our own shit with embarrassing level of Georgian criminals all across the world, not to throw away trash in the middle of the street, not to hit/steal/silence women, not to cut other people on the road instead of taking your place and waiting in line and so on and so forth.

Maybe also it’s worth to stop double standards when you have Turkish ads, Arabic ads all across the country, and then bringing up “history” as a pointer is, at least, embarrassing.

Level of bullshit our nation went into for the past couple decades is insane. Even if all the countries which you don’t like will be gone tomorrow like “poof”, it will fix absolutely ZERO of our problems.

So yeah, perhaps before bullshitting some random ads its worth to reflect (as a nation) on insane amount of problems that we have internally, culturally, and mentally, and try to fix them. Tip: Russian/Turkish/Arabic ads/culture/ppl isn’t even in top 50 of those problems, if they are problems at all, which I don’t think they are.

    Take care.
