ATHENS, Ala. — Athens Main Street is inviting eligible downtown businesses to apply for a new Downtown Business Grant Program aimed at supporting improvements to retail, restaurant, and personal service businesses within the downtown district.
The program is funded by the City of Athens and offers grants up to $20,000 to help businesses make permanent, physical improvements that enhance both individual properties and the overall downtown experience. Grant funds will e awarded on a reimbursement basis after approved projects are completed.

According to Athens Main Street, eligible improvements include upgrades like painting, windows, doors, and awnings; new or updated signage; interior renovations; accessibility improvements; outdoor enhancements like sidewalk dining areas; code compliance updates; and energy efficiency improvements.
To qualify, businesses must be located within the Athens Main Street District. Eligible applicants include retailers, restaurants, and personal service businesses. Tenants may apply with written permission from the property owner. All improvements must be permanent, comply with city codes and ordinances, and receive written approval from Athens Main Street before work begins. Projects involving historic buildings must preserve and enhance the district’s historic character. Government-owned properties and tenants in government-owned buildings are not eligible.
Applications are due by Feb. 9, 2026. Approved projects funded by the grant must be completed by Dec. 31, 2026.
Projects will be reviewed by the Athens Main Street Design Committee, then submitted to the Athens Main Street Board for approval, with final review and approval by the Athens City Council.
