  1. Took me a moment to realize they split the north and south sections to show all the regional results easier.

  2. CivisSuburbianus on

Kast is the leader of an alliance of 3 parties; his own right-wing nationalist Republican Party, a pro-Milei/Pinochet Libertarian Party, and the evangelical/Pentecostal Christian Social Party. Kast was also endorsed by the main centre-right alliance which Kast left to start his own in 2019.

Jara is the leader of the Communist Party of Chile but was endorsed by an alliance of centre-left parties. Jara and her party are socialist but not revolutionary. However, Jara and her party have a mixed record on the governments of Cuba and Venezuela, sometimes criticizing them but sometimes calling them democracies.

There was also another communist candidate, from the Chilean Communist Party-Proletarian Action, which supports Venezuela, North Korea, defends Stalin and accuses the CPC of being revisionists. He received less than 1% of the vote.

  3. Why does it seem like Latin American elections are always a binary choice between a far right nationalist and communist?

  4. As an American, it’s mind boggling that people in other countries look at our shit show and respond with “yeah, this looks like a good idea to emulate”. Electing the far right will always result in less freedom, higher cost of living, and lower quality of life.

  5. I’m so confused is everything just being labeled “ far right “ and “ communism” or is this really where our candidates stand

  6. It is also the first Chilean elections with the compulsory participation. So it is Hitler against Stalin, and you HAVE TO choose.
