US states with a GDP smaller than the San Francisco Bay Area

  1. These GDP maps are always kinda misleading in a knowledge economy.

The Bay area is simply the last step in the value chain. What if someone grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and became a badger years 0 to 25 then moved to SF for a tech job? 100% of that GDP would be “produced” in SF according to this map.

  2. Ok, now show the population of the bay area compared to these states. The bay area is more populous than a large number of these states, so it’s not exactly surprising.

Texas carried by Houston and Dallas, Florida carried by Miami, Illinois carried by Chicago and New York carried by NYC. It really just comes down to big cities

  4. Washington state, Pennsylvania, and Georgia are all bigger. Virginia is only a hair smaller. What/whose numbers are you using?

  5. Nominal or PPP?

GDP is not wealth or income for average people. Heck, in tech giants’ case, it’s not even related to tax revenue since they all evade tax as hell. And tech giants are why SF area has such high number.

  6. You could do the exact same map with any of the other big metropolitan areas in the grey states.

  7. Doesn’t mean a thing. There are no clean public restrooms available in San Francisco. If you want to build one, it will cost tons of money which city doesn’t have (it would further increase GDP though lol)

Can we have a map highlighting states with a lower homeless population than the Bay Area? That would be interesting 🤔

  9. Comparing GDP per capita would potentially be more interesting. Especially if the map doesn’t change significantly.

People: Income inequality is evil! Eat the rich!

Those same people: did you know that corporate headquarters and C-suites are the biggest economic producers?

Aka, a lot of people live there, also cities. At least half of those states have a smaller population.

I’m surprised WA isn’t higher. With Starbucks, Microsoft, Amazon, what’s left of Boeing. I looked it up. WA is like half the gdp of the Bay Area. TIL!

  13. …and their premier transit, the BART, is moving towards implementing severe service cuts. A lot of good (not) their great GDP is doing for those residents

Well, to be fair, the San Francisco Bay Area also has a higher population than my state.
