I logged every sleep event (naps + night sleep) for my baby’s first 150 days and visualized both sleep distribution across the day and total daily sleep hours.

What’s shown:

Vertical bars: sleep periods (night sleep vs naps)

X-axis: day of life

Y-axis: time of day (0–24h)

Line (right axis): total hours slept per day

  1. This is absolutely amazing. I am floored.

How did you do the tracking, by hand ir by attaching some device to Baby?

  2. This is great! What is the exact difference between night sleep and a nap? I see a really long nightly nap around the 130th day. Why is that not a night sleep?

  3. Oh this is really cool, well done.

It’s fascinating to see the order, pattern, and stability appear over time.

  4. I always love this kind of post because it reminds me of the first few months of my kid’s life… And glad that I don’t have to go through it again lmao

That said… Sleeping through the night after only 3 months… Well done to the kid

  5. Pretty nice! How did you distinguish nap from night sleep during the first days? Just based on your hopes? 🙂

Your baby is an EXTRAORDINARILY good sleeper.

From about three months, sleeping uninterrupted for 6+ hours every night? You all must be the envy of all your friends/family with infants.

  7. This is amazing. Great dedication to the data collection process through what must have been a challenging year.

  8. I can’t imagine taking the time and effort to track this in the first year. Especially the first 6 months I was a zombie.

Everything about this is awesome. Most awesome is your choice of min and max for the right axis to match the left. Bravo

  10. Kinda wild how consistent the total sleep time is after just a week or so. Also surprising that baby got consistently 4 naps a day at 4-5 months old. That seems like a lot of short naps but maybe i’m misremembering when my baby transitioned to two naps per day (I was thinking around 6 months)

I find it extremely nice that the scales on either Y-axis are the same. Sometimes with graphs like this I have trouble grasping the differences between each when the scales are wildly different. Sort of like a reverse banana-for-scale.

  12. We recorded all our twins’ meals, meds, diaper changes, etc. for the first several months. This was all on pen and paper, 20 years ago. Still have all those pages somewhere.

  13. Me and my partner are on day 37 now and your graph gave me hope, until I looked at the comments

  14. This would be really cool printed as a helix onto the outside of a cylinder. A sort of sleep relief map.

Why would you do this? why not?

Love the graph and congrats on a kid who sleeps 6+ hours a night!

  15. Incredibly consistent. But to me surprisingly little overall. Read somewhere that they tend to sleep for 14-18 hours per day and at least for my son’s first month he was leaning towards the higher end of that. Never more than 4 hours at a time though. Needs that 🍼
