A lot of posts about birth rate and population recently. Why does a long existing issue suddenly draw attention

  2. It’s almost like you dont need constant nationally averaged high population growth.

Musk and Bezos and white supremacists are upset about this sort of stuff though.

After the black death, life got hard for the wealthy in western Europe, but somewhat better for lower classes. Didn’t last unfortunately. This is not meant to suggest support for any type of catastrophic event to reduce the population.

  4. Replacement rate varies country to country. It’s not the same 2.1 rate for every country. Countries with high child mortality rates have higher replacement rate, around 3 or even 4.

All of South America is below replacement level al this moment, btw.

  6. That above 2.1 is a rough crowd.

Most functional society is… Israel? Mongolia? Oman? Botswana?

Kazakhstan is a great country 🇰🇿🇰🇿🇰🇿 because it’s above replacement level

  8. Africa is just going through the population boost everyone else already went through. Compare Europe pre industrial Revolution and after it. Or the USA’s insane growth throughout the 19th century. China also doubled their population at one point within like 100 years. Mexico went from being less populated as pre-Hispanic age to like 100 million in 60 years.

Increased urbanization, more expensive quality of life, birth control, increase in women’s rights and individualism leads to a decline in birth rates. The population boom we saw in the 19th and 20th century is something unique that will probably never happen again.

  9. Why is Venezuela holding up compared to most other Latin American countries? I figure a full blown economic collapse and brewing civil war would cause very low TFR.

  10. You shouldn’t count Western Sahara as part of Morocco, it isn’t, the saharaui never voted for that, they were forced to live in the desert.

Brazil is doomed. We failed to develop our country before our demographic winter. I’m yet to see a country that did it after it.

Right. So now’s about time we stop seeing this as a “problem” and start finding ways to thrive under these new conditions

  13. Wow, even poor countries that never even developed as much as the west are facing population decline

  14. On the upside below replacement rate birthrates are a positive sign of advances in human and economic development. A decline is nothing to panic about. It is a sign of actual advancement.

  15. A little population reduction wouldn’t be a bad thing. When I was born there were fewer than half the people on Earth as there are now, and nobody thought it was an existential crisis.

Is the fertility rate in southern India so low that it’s dragging India’s entire fertility rate down? The Hindi belt still has a high fertility rate right?

Oh there’s white supremacist comments and pushing trends to breed more babies. Y’all wanted to be slave labor like POC back then and nowadays?
