  1. We already have some of the highest (if not the actual highest) electricity charges in Europe

    Absolute rip off republic

Wouldn’t it be funny if they had to put a whopping great sub station in Dartmouth Square as part of the grid revamp

Can they not make the useless utility companies pay some of their profits towards this too?

Why don’t they take about the priceincreases driven by Corporarate Power Purchase Agreements, Energy Providers behaving like cartels and the data centres consuming all the power making domestic users pay massive rates at peak usage times? Crap biased reporting by RTE in my opinion.

  5. Net zero kids. Did they not tell you about the true cost of renewable electricity.

Oh and you are subsidizing big tech data centres. Just like you bailed out the bankers. Well done folks, you’re so compliant.

  6. This is what you get when people are allowed to build anywhere. Drive through rural France or Germany and you won’t see country roads in the middle of nowhere lined with big houses on half acre sites, people aren’t allowed to build like that.

Combine that with the fact that we produce very little electricity domestically and therefore are buying it on global markets like any other commodity and yeah, we have expensive electricity.

  7. All the electricity suppliers should be paying for this, not the customer.

Should be using their massive profits to reinvest in the infrastructure.

So if we pay for it, does that mean we own it? Or does business gets to socialise loses and privatise profits as usual 🤔

So the outrageous prices we pay don’t cover things like upgrades and repairs. Good to know that we are only paying for the bare minimum.

  10. Yet data centres are defended, coilte get away with their shitty practices of non native trees wrecking lines, and we continue to get fucked. Why aren’t energy companies expected to use profits to pay for this? This country baffles me and I’m genuinely struggling to live here. I can’t get a house so why the fuck am I living and working in a country I clearly can’t lol

  11. Baffled at why the customer has to pay for this. These energy companies are making record profits.

  12. The bills are already about 25% tariffs, surely that is what should be used or the huge profits the energy companies can cover it this upgrade.

We already pay one of the highest rates in EU for electricity.

  13. What I don’t get whatever about the charge to revamp the grid why is VAT being charged on it. So we pay an amount to revamp the grid and then the Gov takes an extra 9% on top of it.

  14. So, will I get shares in return for my financial support?

    That’s how it works, right?

If not, then why aren’t these private companies selling bonds or shares to fund this investment?

    That’s how capitalism works.

Deregulation is going well then…ahem….the profits to sustain 11, yes 11 electricity supply companies has to come from somewhere. Surely it’s time to renationise, a country this small only needs one supplier.
