EU lawmakers backed tighter controls on imports of agricultural products under a potential trade agreement with the South American trade bloc Mercosur, as Brussels tries to get sceptics on board to sign the EU’s largest-ever trade accord.

The European Commission proposed on Tuesday dropping the EU’s effective ban on new combustion-engine cars from 2035 by allowing continued sales of some non-electric vehicles following intense pressure from Germany, Italy and Europe’s auto sector.

Europe’s second largest carmaker said on Tuesday the European Commission’s proposals to support the auto industry’s energy transition failed to address key challenges, including a roadmap for light commercial vehicles and flexibility on 2030 targets for passenger cars.

Lagfin, the Luxembourg-based holding company that controls the Italian drinks group, said on Tuesday it had reached an agreement with the Italian revenue agency over a tax dispute, paying 405 million euros over a four year period.

Italy’s government has asked parliament to approve a 2.4-billion-euro ($2.82 billion) investment over 15 years for the maintenance and modernisation of its frigate fleet, a parliamentary document seen by Reuters showed.

The Italian shipbuilder on Tuesday set a goal of a 40% rise in revenues and a near doubling of core profits in its new five-year plan, expanding to the defence and underwater businesses while keeping its leadership on cruise ships.

INSURERS

Italy’s budget for 2026 will include an additional 1.3-billion-euro ($1.53 billion) contribution from insurance companies through a revision of charges on premiums for vehicles and vessels, a parliamentary document showed on Tuesday.
