It’s worth stating that there’s a lot of diversity in terms of regional autonomy even within these categories. Some of these so-called federations don’t really behave as such in practice, because federalism requires a minimal level of democracy to function as intended.

What does unitary vs federal mean when taiwan isn’t federal? Its constitution is a near copy of the US one, sure there aren’tstatess, but the county divisions would be functionally equivalent.

Italy is unitary only geographically, but culturally and especially it is as if it were federal where many regions do not get along. In fact, since 1970 it has been divided into 20 regions that have socially destroyed entire cities in favor of others. Of these 20 regions, which are truly mini-states, only 3 are virtuous; the others are just an administrative flop made up of corruption, waste, and malpractice. If we then talk about some regions like Tuscany, Campania, and Calabria, in these regions every city hates the other.
