The West Bank of Mosul also known as old Mosul where most of the old and historic buildings and houses are was subject to the most brutal and intensive fighting throughout the entire liberation front with fighters from a dozen countries and factions coming together to liberate the city.
90%+ of the East bank was destroyed during the liberation including all churches, mosques and any places of heritage. While the East Coast was only about 10-15% destroyed.
Today Mosul has taken back its place as Iraqs second largest city, re constructed 90% of its churches, mosques and a good amount of its heritage homes. Mosul re opened its international airport in 2025 and the destruction of the Prophet Jonah tomb led to the discovery of an ancient Assyrian palace complex underneath, in 2025 the worlds largest Lamassu statue was discovered there.

The two pictures are almost exactly the same with the exception of vegetation. It is either the first one was taken in winter, and the second one in spring, or people watered their parks and gardens after the war.
They even fixed the black water, nice!

Also that Lamassu statue is incredible. Wild to think it was just under people’s feet like that for thousands of years undiscovered.
I’m not defending the previous regime but it would be more nuanced to add quotes to “liberation” when a city in almost entirely destroyed albeit the restoration and new discoveries.

I hope Gaza will recover as well; both have faced the worst of times, but Gaza has suffered far more atrocities.

Old town seems to bo mostly rubble still? But good to see its getting better. I still remember a documentary showing the initial mine clearing and rooms full of dead bodies in a completely destroyed city
