Dear Reader,

Dot has an irrational fear of starving my guests. Consequently, I overestimate, I overprepare, I overcook. One year, I made 14 tourtières (meat pies), based on a French-Canadian friend’s recipe, for a holiday get-together. They were delicious, as just two guests learned. I was left with 13 ¾ tourtières. Tabarnak! I was eating tourtière until Easter.

I would have done well to use today’s Climate Champ, a handy-dandy tool to help us estimate just how much food we need for a dinner party. You put in how many guests, their typical intake (are they big eaters? Nibblers? average?), the type of food you’re serving, and whether you want leftovers, and abracadabra, the Guesstimator spits out not only the amounts of various foods you should prepare but also recipe suggestions.

Another great resource? The Scrappy Cooking YouTube channel, which offers videos on how to use up every last bit of food in your kitchen. (Get it? Scrappy? As in food scraps? And also as in spirited and determined!)

Dot’s eat-better tip? Shop at farmers markets. It’s a great way to support your local farmers and build a resilient community, as well as shorten the food supply chain, which reduces fuel emissions.

Hungrily,

Dot
