  1. AI created as much carbon pollution this year as New York City and guzzled up as much H20 as people consume globally in water bottles, according to new estimates.

The study paints what’s likely a pretty conservative picture of AI’s environmental impact since it’s based on the relatively limited amount of data that’s currently available to the public.

A lack of transparency from tech companies makes it harder to see the potential environmental toll of AI becoming a part of everyday tasks, argues the author of the study who’s been tracking the electricity consumption of data centers used for AI and crypto mining over the years.

  2. I genuinely wonder how many people have suffered or even died due to the sheer amount of resources being pumped into this bubble. We know there are a few direct deaths and killings because the chatbots hyped up folks with existing mental health issues, but I wonder how many folks have been imperilled indirectly.

The answer should be zero, but something tells me it’s not.

The idea of an AI assistant is amazing, I’d love to have Jarvis as my buddy. Too bad I live in a world with corporate slopware.

  3. So you are saying we should put the datacenters in space instead? Maybe its not so crazy afterall…

Reminds me of how conservatives used to say EVs were bad for the environment because power plants use coal…

But that was dismissed because the world was going to transition to renewables at the same time. Now, here we are decades later and renewables are the fastest growing source of power in the world… yet we are now getting that same argument from the very people who defended EVs.
