A total of 20 “Weight Limit” road signs have been stolen from a regional road in Cēsis municipality, said Latvian State Roads.
These signs were installed because the road loses its load-bearing capacity in wet weather and becomes slippery. Latvian State Roads will report the theft to the police.
During thawing, weight restrictions are imposed on gravel road sections to prevent irreversible damage to the roads. If roads that have lost their load-bearing capacity continue to be used by vehicles heavier than ten tons, they may become completely impassable, including for vehicles that violate the regulations, according to the company.
As wet weather conditions continue, 160 sections of gravel roads have already become muddy and weight restrictions of up to ten tons have been introduced. The roads most affected by thawing are in Zemgale, where restrictions have been introduced on 103 sections, Vidzeme – 21, Latgale – 19, the Riga region – 16, and Kurzeme – one section.
