The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is likely to displace people from jobs in a similar way seen during the Industrial Revolution, the governor of the Bank of England has said.
Andrew Bailey said the UK needed to have the “training, education, [and] skills in place” so workers could shift into jobs that use AI.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that people looking for a job would find securing employment “a lot easier” if they had such skills.
However, he warned that there was an issue with younger, inexperienced professionals finding it difficult to secure entry-level roles due to AI.

I feel the constant torrent of ‘officials’ coming out with this are completely unrealistic around what ‘AI’ actually is. Generative AI will cost a few low-tier office jobs but also create a bunch of higher tier office jobs. But a lot of that isn’t due to AI, it is due to better approaches to process automation.
What I do agree with, 100 %, is that people need a chance to skill up in how to design process automations, how to manage information sources, organise digital born content (information management), analyse trends and understand how to create meaningful data and assess performance (data science/business intelligence).
Fortunately, we have some of the best courses in the world in information management, so this shouldn’t be difficult. What is problematic still is the ‘life long learning’ offer that is required to upskill existing staff.

It’s funny, because mostly it’s actually the ‘leadership’ type jobs that would best be replaced by AI, and the value add of replacing them would be exceptional. But they’d never replace those jobs, not that those jobs really ‘add value’.
