The one in Tennessee has to be in Gatlinburg right? I went like 10 years ago and it was just one slope with snow machines while the rest of the mountain was bare. It was cool to see since I live down south where it rarely snows but it felt odd seeing just one ski run while the rest was empty.

SC here, went skiing in NC once as a kid and thought WNC was basically Colorado until I returned.

There’s no ski area in Texas. At least not a mountain with lifts and snow.

OMG pick a single color for the data. This is impossible to read.

Should note a lot of the midwestern areas are just big rolling hills with no mountains

Hi Arkansas here, we actually have 3 ski resorts…. have since the 40s

It’s wild that Minnesota and Montana have the same number of ski areas.

TX is misleading a bit

wisconsin cracks me up. i don’t doubt they have a ton of ski areas, but the longest run is gonna be about a minute to the bottom lol

Texas has lift-serviced mountain biking but no actual ski hill.

Connecticut used to have more, but climate has warmed so not as many now

Yeah Texas doesn’t have one.

Wisconsin and Michigan have a lot because the winters are long, cold, and snowy and people still like to get out and play in it. This map isn’t a testament to the upper midwest being a skiing paradise comparable to the West, it’s a testament to people finding ways to enjoy what they’ve got.
Just because the terrain can’t hold a candle to Colorado doesn’t mean the areas where people ski don’t count as “ski areas”.

I think it’s a reach to say Texas has 1 ski area. there’s a reason they all go to colorado in the winter
TeeOffOnMe on
If you go through the driftless area in Wisconsin there are lots of little ski resorts I’m sure that’s why the numbers are higher. Nothing huge of course. I drive by what looks like one of those massive ski jumps when I visit my cousin in the Ontario area.

Wisconsin beating all the mountain states is wild to me

I’ve personally seen 2 ski areas in ohio but I’ve never known anyone I’ve ever met in ohio to ever ski

I can think of at least 4 ski areas within 30 minutes or so of Milwaukee
They’re nothing huge but you can put skis on and go down some hills
HemlockHex on
Don’t be fooled by the Midwest. We have mostly very disappointing hills, but on the contrary cross country skiing is huge here. Most high schools have a cross country ski team in my area.
OK_The_Nomad on
Does this include cross country too. If so, this doesn’t give a very accurate view bc basically you can cross country anywhere with snow. And it’s a whole diff game than downhill.
Feel like this would be more meaningful if you separated cross country from downhill and boarding.

I’m guessing snow skiiing?
And where the hell can I snow ski in Texas?
heihey123 on
I think this would be better as a percentage. It’s hard to have a lot of ski areas in a place like Rhode Island because there’s nowhere to put it.

lol Alabama skiing must be great
Bad color scheme
This color scale drives me nuts
Not all ski areas are created equal.
