The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) managed traffic on the national highway just above Vík this morning after rocks fell from Reynisfjall and landed on the road.
This was confirmed to mbl.is by Ágúst Freyr Bjartmarsson, senior supervisor for IRCA in Vík.
He said that a large rock fell from the mountain during the night. The boulder came down the slope, crossed the national highway, and came to a stop there. Soil and smaller rocks accompanied it and were left scattered on the road.
Vehicle damaged
IRCA received a report of the incident at around 5 a.m., after a driver had driven into the debris left on the road, damaging the vehicle. According to Bjartmarsson, the driver blew a tyre but avoided more serious damage. No one was injured.
IRCA has since cleared the road, which is now fully open to traffic.
Bjartmarsson said it is difficult to assess the full extent of the rockfall as it was completely dark at the time.
