In April, Amazon officially relaunched its state-of-the-art, same-day delivery center, nicknamed SKY2 on Plantside Drive.Wednesday marked the first Christmas Eve at the facility. According to Amazon’s Andre Woodson, while SKY2 is busy year-round, the holiday season is at another level.“Normally we are processing tens of thousands of packages daily, and that works out to hundreds of thousands a week that will be processed out of this site,” Woodson said. “Now, during the Christmas season, we are looking at millions of items.”Certain orders received before 5 p.m. on Wednesday were delivered that day. To get all that done, Woodson told WLKY it takes efficient use of technology and elbow grease.“It’s incredible to see how advanced this technology is,” Woodson said. “That works in tandem with the amazing workforce that allows us to get packages all across Greater Louisville.”That technology includes automated shelves for stocking, a system that sorts products based on zip code to make delivery easier, and many quality-of-life and safety programs. While Woodson thinks it’s all impressive, the focus on the human contribution is still paramount.“It’s really going to be important to us as we look to the future to make sure our buildings are state-of-the-art and ergonomic,” Woodson said. “So, we are working safer and smarter, not harder.”Across the country, Amazon same-day facilities like the one on Plantside Drive serve more than 9,000 cities and towns.

In April, Amazon officially relaunched its state-of-the-art, same-day delivery center, nicknamed SKY2 on Plantside Drive.

Wednesday marked the first Christmas Eve at the facility. According to Amazon’s Andre Woodson, while SKY2 is busy year-round, the holiday season is at another level.

“Normally we are processing tens of thousands of packages daily, and that works out to hundreds of thousands a week that will be processed out of this site,” Woodson said. “Now, during the Christmas season, we are looking at millions of items.”

Certain orders received before 5 p.m. on Wednesday were delivered that day. To get all that done, Woodson told WLKY it takes efficient use of technology and elbow grease.

“It’s incredible to see how advanced this technology is,” Woodson said. “That works in tandem with the amazing workforce that allows us to get packages all across Greater Louisville.”

That technology includes automated shelves for stocking, a system that sorts products based on zip code to make delivery easier, and many quality-of-life and safety programs.

While Woodson thinks it’s all impressive, the focus on the human contribution is still paramount.

“It’s really going to be important to us as we look to the future to make sure our buildings are state-of-the-art and ergonomic,” Woodson said. “So, we are working safer and smarter, not harder.”

Across the country, Amazon same-day facilities like the one on Plantside Drive serve more than 9,000 cities and towns.
