AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A silent book club hosted a Jólabókaflóð event to support RISE Augusta through an Icelandic tradition that began during World War II.

The silent book club and book drive supported RISE Augusta through the Icelandic tradition that began during the war because paper was one of the few unrestricted goods, making books the most cherished holiday gift.
“Books open our minds and our hearts to people in our community and beyond, and I think that that’s very important to instill in people at a young age. And there’s nothing like a good book,” said Alex Sigers, Creative Content Manager at the Book Tavern.
The tradition has now evolved into a national celebration in Iceland, centered on comfort, connection, and the joy of reading.
Tickets for the event were $30 to $50, with proceeds supporting RISE Augusta.
