President Lee Jae Myung says the government will continue to uphold the principle of providing special compensation for those who make sacrifices for the good of the public.

Lee made the remark on Friday during a luncheon he hosted at the presidential office in Yongsan for bereaved families of police officers, firefighters and other civil servants who died during rescue operations.

Lee said South Korea is the country that it is today by virtue of those who devoted themselves to the life and safety of the people and to the sacrifice made, in particular, by many public service personnel.

He paid tribute to those who took the lead in responding to the pressing and desperate calls of the people, hence playing the role of the state.

The president then pledged to repay the devotion and sacrifices made by such people by making South Korea a country that provides the adequate treatment for sacrifices made for the nation and community.
