We just moved to a new apartment in Munich and the heating is off. We turned it on in the bathroom by twisting the similar knob as above and it heated within minutes however this one in the living room is not working. It’s also not even turning fully, it goes in the direction of 1->5 and there’s no way for me to get 2 or 3. It stays cold completely. Anybody has any idea how to fix this?

The current state is off / don’t freeze. Try turning it anti clockwise. The grey pin indicates the level. Try to gently force it. If this does not work, you can take the thing off with some pincers. Below there will be some metal pin. Gently nudge it exactly from the top with a hammer. The pin is the valve and sometimes those get stuck

  2. Easy tip:

During the day when you turn the knob, you will oftern hear a hiss of water rushing though the pipe. This means you opened the valve and it will start to heat up.

Often the heating system in apartment buildings will not heat during the night/very easy morning.

  3. Ideas here:

First try to ventilate the radiator. Usually there is a little srew on the side. Open this screw very slowly until air or water comes out. Wait for water coming and let it drip for a few seconds. Then close it.
If that didn’t work, try the next step.

Behind this “knob” (Thermostat) is a little pin that opens or closes the valve. If this is jammed the radiator won’t work.
To fix this you can remove the Thermostat and push this pin in with a hard object (pliers for example) it has to come out on its own again. Do this a view times until it moves freely. Also add some oil to it! That actually one of the rare cases in which WD40 is ideal.

  5. Did you check if the stopper / limit is active? You can adjust it via the small knob on the bigger end of the thermostat:

Definitely try this before you follow any other, possibly more destructive, advice.

You could also check if there is air in the radiator.
The radiator is filled with hot water, but over time the system can collect air, and then theres airbubbles in the radiator. If there’s air instead of water, it does not get hot properly.

It’s easy and only takes minutes, just go on youtube and search for “Heizkörper entlüften” so you know what to do and what to expect. Put a cup unter the little opening and keep a small towel at hand.
If it’s only water, right from the start, then there’s no air and that’s not the reason. If there’s air coming out wait till water is coming.

You should check / de-air all your radiators each year, to make sure that they work as efficient as possible.
If they are making gurgling noises that’s also a good indicator that there’s air in it. 😊
