Iceland set a new temperature record for December, with the temperature reaching 19.8 degrees Celsius on Christmas Eve.

This was reported by the national broadcaster RÚV .

The record was set in the town of Seyðisfjörður in the east of the country. In neighboring Bakkagerd, the temperature also approached the record mark, reaching 19.7 degrees Celsius.

The previous December high dated back to December 2, 2019, when Quisqueria recorded 19.7 degrees Celsius.

Icelandic Meteorological Office meteorologist Birgir Örn Heskuldsson explained that the record-breaking temperatures were made possible by a combination of a warm air mass and strong winds. These conditions create downdrafts near the mountains, further warming the air.

According to the expert, it is precisely these weather scenarios that most often lead to the setting of temperature records.
