UK is ‘unwelcoming’ and ‘racist’ for overseas NHS health workers, warns top doctor

  1. If they are good at their job and actually care, it doesn’t matter where they’re from. My dad has an amazing physiotherapist from India, can’t sing his praises high enough. On the other hand, my husband was severely neglected on a hospital ward a year ago after major surgery by African nurses who clearly needed more training.

  2. What’s the medias obsession with calling anyone who’s a government stooge the “top doctor”. I can very much reassure you Jeanette Dickson is not a top doctor, not even a mediocre doctor, but she does enjoy political leadership roles like royal college president while doing f all of any use to doctors or patients while in these roles

  3. Agree based on my recent experience.

I had a few nurses involved in my care, and the older white nurse was pretty forward with her racist views when it was just us two – and also being very blunt with the black nurse that was caring for me.

It’s really hard to challenge these people when you are vulnerable and reliant on them to even pee so I kept my mouth shut for my own safety, but it’s not the first time I’ve seen British professionals talk to the overseas workers as though they’re second class citizens.

My neighbour is an African immigrant working in patient care and she’s honestly the kindest lady I’ve ever met. I feel so bad that she’ll be facing the same shit day in day out from these hateful idiots.

Doctors are allegedly in demand, so why if Britain is a nasty racist s-hole why is there no shortage (?) of them seeking to work and live in the UK?

First of all, big respect to all of the NHS staff who treated me over the years. Never noticed a diminution in kindness and treatment quality, irrespective of where they come from.

That being said there is an artificial bottle neck that we have for our young people where we choose not to spend the money to train them and instead import from overseas. This is wrong on two levels. Firstly, we piggyback off the hard work of other countries and secondly we stifle the life chances of our own.

I don’t see a solution other than actually putting the money in to train our talented young people.

  6. This is fucking bollocks. Absolutely BS. We actively recruit overseas health staff and they are the backbone of the NHS. The overwhelming majority of patients are grateful for their treatment by overseas workers, particularly Indians and Filipinos. That there may be a small minority who aren’t doesn’t mean “the UK” is unwelcoming and racist.

  7. I had a foreign HMO/doctor barely able to speak English (and had his personal phone ring multiple times) during a very serious talk regarding a close relative. Now if that was an English doctor, the experience would have been far easier to understand and take in, than the confusion and questions we were left in during the shock. His English was far too poor to really work in his patient facing role – I know they have to pass a test, but a lot of countries have issues with plagiarism etc around these anyway.

Now that’s not to say during the same time, we didn’t have many fabulous foreign doctors/nurses, but to just play the racism card isn’t the right solution. There are just certain things through either poor communication skills or different training, that does mean hard questions may have to be asked of foreign staff (and support/training. given if needed).

  8. This is a misrepresentation of the issue.

There is certainly an anti-immigration (and often outright racist) rhetoric in the UK which will undoubtedly put some off.

However there is a legitimate concern re the recruitment of doctors who have graduated abroad. It has led to high rates of unemployment amongst doctors who have graduated in the UK. The government has committed to introducing legislation which will enforce the prioritisation of UK grads.

I don’t agree with racism. I despise it. But I do agree with UK grad prioritisation.

There are enough doctors in the UK. The government just hasn’t created enough jobs for them. That’s why you are struggling to get an appointment.

spent 4 weeks on an acute ward with an empyema and spent a lot of time talking to the Indian nurses on the ward. They where the most compassionate and caring people I have ever been treated by.
The South African parient on the ward was awfull to them, throwing things at them and using expletives to demand care. I did the decent thing and warned him that if he carried on I would write DNR on his chest with an indelible marker pen if he didn’t stop… he got thrown out by security eventually.

So racist and unwelcoming that thousands upon thousands come every year. In terms of migration in general, hundreds of thousands. As soon as immigration rules were relaxed we were into the million plus range. They must have been forced to come to the UK, since it’s so racist and unwelcoming.

  11. The NHS is probably the most diverse organisation in the world and the UK is one of the most diverse and progressive nations in the world, so what exactly are they comparing it to?

I’ve had wonderful treatment from many foreign doctors over the years, who treated me with great care and professionalism. However I have also had bad care from foreign doctors too, missing things that they should have spotted and having to fight for what I believe is a reasonable treatment.

But I can also say the same about domestic doctors. I’ve had great moments of care and some awful ones too. It’s almost like race and ethnicity has nothing to do with one’s ability to treat a patient

  13. When you work for the nhs and a foreign nurse puts report in that a patient has dementia, expensive assessments and investigations proceeded, turns out no dementia – just the nurses lack of English language was so bad the patient can’t understand her (neither can the staff)

When you work for the nhs and the foreign doctors blank you, despite being qualified.

When you work for the nhs and you watch qualified Philippino nurse try to hoist a patient with a broken back.

When you work for the nhs and watch the foreign workers get preference on Xmas holidays, as they “Miss their family”

When you work for the nhs and staff shortages are chronic and they have to import foreign workers, pay for lots of extras to get them here – rather than train English people, who can speak English, who don’t want to train cos of the debt they’ll get in for a shit wage.

NHS isn’t broken it’s destroyed, and pouring money into it is a black hole.
Nurses are punched, spat at, abused – on 12.5 hr shifts, over worked due to the staff shortages, foreign staff who frankly don’t have a fkin clue.
In wards bursting at the seams cos population expansion (can’t think why??) – Houses and estates popping up, quadrupling town sizes whilst hospitals stay the same size.

I’m sure the dudley doo-gooders will be clucking about this post, the same ones who clap on their doorstep during covid, and didn’t see the hell nurses went thru on isolation wards, then denied decent pay rises shortly afterwards.

“When you work for the nhs….” horror stories, money wastage stories, incompetence stories, and foreign worker stories go on and on… But the mainstream media will deny it, and I’m sure a few people on reddit will, but trust me – the rabbit hole goes wayyyyy deeper than you think

I work in healthcare and I am a foreigner in the UK and this might just be confirmation bias but i feel like patients feel a lot more at ease to be openly racist towards me than before the pandemic. Someone texted me “foren cunt go back home in your boat”(which makes no sense) and stuff like this just recently and although i did report it nothing has happened yet. It is not the first time either. It happens randomly as well like in a costco car park.

I get it that people are frustrated about the living standards, but yeah, i have not recommended the uk to any of my friends since ive started working here.

And i am white/eastern european, i cant imagine what its like to be one of the people that racists really really hate.

If it’s unwelcoming and racist, why do they come here? I can point them to 100 other countries which would be more unwelcoming and racist if they like.
