Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mohamed Ayman Ashour, has stated that sports activities across universities and institutes in the country expanded in 2025, with record student participation. This is reported by

The 52nd Egyptian Universities And Institutes Championship, Martyr Al-Rifai, was held with the participation of 75 higher education institutions. In addition, Egypt launched its first official University League, featuring five team competitions and 27 individual tournaments involving more than 9,000 students, according to the minister.
Mohamed Ayman Ashour noted that internal university leagues played a key role in preparing students for the upcoming 53rd Egyptian Universities And Institutes Championship for the 2025–2026 academic year, which will also include 75 universities. The competition programme covers a wide range of sports, including crossfit, gymnastics, archery, esports, boxing, kung fu, speedball and bowling. Overall, more than 233,000 students took part in internal university competitions nationwide.
The minister also highlighted the “100 Days of Sport” initiative, launched under the President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s Human Development Programme, “A New Beginning to Build the Human Being,” which promotes sports on university campuses to support student health, fitness and fair competition. The initiative involved 41 universities, with 512 sporting events organised and total student participation exceeding 103,000.
