Newly declassified images show British Royal Navy submarine and Merlin helicopter next to the Russian spy ship Yantar in the Irish Sea. The Merlin helicopter was also looking for a Russian submarine. It was near a UK-Ireland gas pipe.
Expect a strongly worded complaint to be issued toward Russia at any moment

Looks like a P&O ferry could give it a run for its money.

This is the headline “Russian submarine followed spy ship into British waters” not what you posted.

Was this inside Irish or UK waters?

I’m President Connolly will offer her apologies to the Russian ambassador.

We need to get real and invest in defence. We would never stop an invasion from Russia but we just need to pull our own weight a bit and not have to rely on our former colonial masters to defend us 100 percent of the time.

Ireland needs to ditch the folklore behind ‘neutrality’ and become serious about defending this country.

Interesting statement from Switzerland, with its airforce of ~450 planes
It’s a wonder the usual people aren’t in this comment section here to claim Russia has zero intentions to harm Ireland.

I think this is an issue where reddit and its male middle aged group here are very much in an echo chamber. Genuinely no point engaging if you disagree.

It’s very worrying how dependent we are on imported gas through fragile pipelines we can’t protect. Stopping exploration and not building an LNG terminal were naive decisions.

If Russia put a landing crew in mayo, we would be over run in two hours

Na let’s just keep outsourcing our security to our greatest historical enemy. Everything is working just fine as is.

Whatever your position in this debate its important to understand that this “declassified image” is a propaganda picture.
Submarines don’t surface next to their targets in perfect frame beside an ASW helicopter dipping its sonar to be photographed from a martime patrol aircraft when conducting surveillance. This is posed to make a point and everyone should understand that when drawing conclusions about what’s happening in the scene.

Surprised at some of the comments against doing our fair share and increasing defense.
We are a massive weak link in Europe and Russia knows this.
Our government has no right to start commenting on the ethics of belligerents in foreign wars if we cannot even track a drone coming into our airspace.

Ireland needs to join NATO, or an EU based defense pact alternative. War is coming for the continent, whether we want it to or not. We are not Switzerland, we don’t have the advantage of being boxed in by Nato to keep an aggressor out.
Our waters are exposed to nuclear submarines and old allies are turning into enemies. The Island would make an attractive beachhead.

Cool yeah it’s great the way we can’t be arsed doing anything to provide for our own or collective European security isn’t it ?

Looks like the propagandists are back from Christmas vacation already with another post trying to scare Irish people into joining NATO. Not going to happen.
