Severe weather in north of country, New Year forecast, firework-free ‘dog parking’ in Oslo and more news from Norway this Monday.
Airport operator offers free New Year’s Eve ‘dog parking’
Owners of dogs who get frightened by New Year’s fireworks can bring them to Oslo Airport, which is offering a free car park and firework-free zone.
The use of fireworks is banned in close proximity to the airport, which means the loud noises that can scare animals on New Year’s eve will be absent here.
“No fireworks are set off around the airport, which makes the area one of the quietest places in eastern Norway on New Year’s Eve,” Oslo Airport’s operator Avinor said in a press release reported by NRK.
A car park at the airport will be available “to dog owners who are looking for an alternative to cities and built-up areas,” the company said.
Parking will be free of charge and available throughout the evening.
Severe weather alert in north of Norway
Stormy weather over the Christmas period is ongoing with over 30 centimetres of snow forecast in parts of the Nord-Troms region.
That has resulted in the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) issuing a ‘yellow’ severe weather alert related to the risk of hazardous driving conditions, closed roads and potential power outages.

Strong winds are also expected to cause heavy snowdrifts locally which could disrupt air traffic. That comes after Tromsø Airport was forced to close due to the weather conditions on Sunday.
The heavy winter weather is also causing a raised avalanche risk in parts of northern counties Troms and Finnmark.
The latest weather alerts can be checked on the MET’s live website Yr.

New year’s Eve weather: Eastern Norway set for best conditions
Southern Norway is likely to experience clear weather conditions during the final days of 2025, but a low-pressure front coming in from the Vestlandet region and parts of the south will bring more mixed weather by New Year’s Eve, meteorologist Per Egil Haga said via NRK.
“Precipitation from the west will probably not reach eastern Norway by midnight on New Year’s Eve, so the best firework weather will be here,” Haga said.
Southeastern parts of Østlandet and Østfold will be the areas with the clearest skies, NRK writes.
2026 to bring new immigration restrictions
The arrival of 2026 is likely to see the government’s policy of introducing new restrictions on immigration begin to pass through parliament or put into effect.
Norway is introducing stricter requirements on areas including financial requirements and language competency as it aligns itself more closely with European Union policies.
