Norway has launched the world’s first panoramic night train dedicated to seeing the Northern Lights. The Midnight Aurora Route runs seasonally from October to March, timed for peak aurora activity north of the Arctic Circle.

Passengers ride in glass-enclosed carriages with floor-to-ceiling windows, glass roofs, and reclining seats that tilt upward. Low lighting and climate control keep the interior comfortable, so travellers can watch the sky without stepping into the cold.

The onboard experience is informative without being overwhelming. English-speaking guides offer photography tips and explain the science of the aurora. Short films and live updates on geomagnetic activity and cloud cover appear on screens throughout the carriages.

The route begins at Narvik Railway Station, following the historic Ofoten Line through mountains and fjords. Stops at Bjørnfjell and Katterat allow passengers to stretch their legs, enjoy bonfires and hot drinks, and listen to local stories under the night sky.

Tickets cost around €130 (£110), making it an affordable luxury compared with guided aurora tours. Peak months fill quickly, so booking ahead on the official Norwegian Travel website is recommended.
