  1. Why didn’t Western Siberia capture the surroundings mountains to protect itself from invaders???

  2. It might be because of the siberian traps. For like a million years that was a sea of lava, so probably difficult to keep anything elevated

  3. Almost no one lives there yet. The population density north of Tyumen is less than 1 person per km².

  4. Almost as flat as Florida!

Seriously, is *anywhere* as flat as Florida? The highest natural elevation in the state is only 105m (and is basically in Alabama) and the most prominent peak is only 60m.

  5. Full to the brim with carnivorous insects. 1920s photos of map surveyors / explorers in full beekeeping gear just to survive the clouds of midges. Avoid in summer.

  6. Random irrelevant fact but this region is not considered “Siberia” in Russia itself, nor is the Pacific coast. Siberia is just the central region of what we call that name and actually the purple line on the right is its east border.

  7. Looks like Kazakstan could pull a suprice attack and cut Russia in two if hostilities ever came between them….
