Canada holds a 5-1 lead over Denmark after two periods in their round-robin matchup at the World Juniors on Monday.
Team Canada entered the second period with a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Gavin McKenna, Braeden Cootes, and Zayne Parekh in the first frame.
Denmark got on the board 28 seconds in the frame when Mads Klyvo beat Carter George with a sharp-angle shot and the team’s second shot of the game.
Canada then returned to the power play six minutes later where captain Porter Martone wired his shot past Denmark netminder Patrick Tiedjen as Canada re-gained their three-goal lead.
With just under five minutes remaining in the period, McKenna buried his second goal of the game from the right faceoff dot to give Canada a 5-1 lead.
George’s workload remained light after two periods, allowing a goal on five shots while his team was 2-for-2 on the man advantage.
Tiedjen was the busier of the two goaltenders, allowing two goals on 16 shots in the frame and five goals on 31 shots overall. Denmark failed to convert on their only opportunity on the power play.
Canada opened the tournament with a 7-5 win over Czechia on Boxing Day and squeaked by Latvia 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.
Both teams have played two games in this year’s tournament entering Monday’s action and have one more game remaining
Denmark begun the tournament with losses to Finland and Czechia before taking on Canada on Monday. They are in taking part in the tournament’s top division for the first time since 2019.
The Danes take on Latvia on Tuesday, who could be their prime competition to avoid regulation.
A Canadian win against Denmark will put them in prime position to win Group B as they take on Finland on New Year’s Eve to finish the round-robin portion of the competition.
